Identity
Identity uses the two sides of a single leaf, moving from the outward-facing surface shown in Persona, through the overlap of its front and back in Resonance, to the quieter reverse surface shown in Essence. Together, the three works consider how what is readily visible and what is less apparent remain parts of the same identity.
Character
Character moves from the restraint of Reserved, through the balance of Composed, to the openness of Candid. In each work, the front and back of a single leaf are brought together differently, using composition to suggest how character may be expressed.
Experience
Experience follows three kinds of change: a turn in direction in Divergence, a decisive break in Rupture, and the gradual accumulation of wear in Weathered. Together, the works consider how both sudden events and slower changes become part of a life.
Legacy
Legacy considers how what comes before us continues to shape what follows. Lineage looks back to ancestral origins, Constitution considers how inheritance and experience combine, and Status turns outward to the standing a person comes to hold among others.
The Silent Selves Story
The idea for Silent Selves began with a small group of dried autumn leaves resting on a cabinet. One day, as I passed them, I noticed how differently the two sides of the same leaf had aged. The front retained colour and surface marks; the back was paler, with its veins and fine structure easier to see. I began photographing both sides to explore what those differences might suggest.
Across Silent Selves, the front and back of each individual leaf are sometimes shown separately and sometimes brought together. This became a way of thinking about identity—not as a single outward appearance, but as something shaped by what is visible, what is less obvious, what we inherit, and what changes through experience.
Where the surfaces overlap, their differences remain, but their shared veins and contours also become clearer. I was interested in allowing each side to retain its character while still being understood as part of the same leaf.
Photographing the leaves against a muted, textured background keeps attention on their form, colour, marks and structure. The twelve works are arranged as four triptychs—Identity, Character, Experience and Legacy—which move from how we present ourselves, through character and change, to what we inherit and the place we come to hold.

Colour is likely the first thing noticed in Persona, but the visible surface also carries fine veins, marks and changes in texture. I wanted to give that outward-facing side of the leaf its full importance rather than treat appearance as something merely superficial.
Persona considers what we make visible to others. The leaf's colour draws attention, while its weathering suggests that even the most readily seen parts of us carry a history.
Persona begins the Identity triptych in Silent Selves, followed by Resonance and Essence. Across the three works, attention moves from the outward-facing surface, through the meeting of front and back, to the less immediately visible structure beneath.
